The Grief Recovery Institute: Services and Programs

The Grief Recovery Institute and thousands of affiliates offer a variety of programs for grievers. Certified grief recovery personnel facilitate Grief Recovery Outreach Programs in cities large and small throughout the United States and Canada. Programs are beginning in other parts of the world.

The Grief Recovery Outreach Program is designed to assist grievers in completing the pain caused by any major loss. The Outreach Program is ideal for anyone who has difficulty finding a partner to do the work outlined in this book.

Grief recovery certification authorizes the use of our registered trademark. Look for Grief image Recovery®. It is your assurance that the facilitator has direct access to us and uses our program as designed.

The Grief Recovery Institute is the training facility for the certification program.

The Grief Recovery Institute conducts intensive seminars for grievers nationwide and provides speakers for a wide variety of organizations.

A Note from Our Canadian Partner

I first met John in the early 1980s. As a funeral director, I realized that I as well as others in my profession received no training or formal education in grief counseling. As a professional group, we were ill equipped to help the grievers who called upon us following a death. In four and a half days, John taught me more about people’s reactions to death and, more importantly, what to do about it than in all the years of formal education and years of experience in funeral service combined. Never again did I have to ask myself, “What more could I have done?”

In 1989 I approached John and Russell with the idea of expanding the Grief Recovery Institute into Canada. They agreed, and in 1990 the Grief Recovery Institute of Canada opened its doors. For the past eighteen years, John and Russell have given their time, love, and support to this organization. On many occasions, they have appeared in the Canadian office having flown all night to lend a hand when we needed them the most. Now, almost twenty years later, the Grief Recovery Institute of Canada and the Grief Recovery Educational Society (a nonprofit charitable organization) are a valued resource throughout the country to grievers and the caregiving community.

Together we have introduced a process of recovery that actually enhances life in an environment that can so easily limit our ability to participate in life. I know there are a great many people who join me in saying thank you, and we love you.
